Northern Lakes Amateur Radio Club: Mission Statement
The mission of the Northern Lakes Amateur Radio Club is to provide multiple services related to amateur radio in the Grand Rapids, Itasca County, and surrounding Arrowhead Region of Northeastern Minnesota. Northern Lakes Amateur Radio Club provides backup emergency communications for local governments and hospitals, trained severe weather spotters which forward severe weather reports to the National Weather Service, through amateur radio classes train people to become amateur radio operators, conduct amateur radio exam sessions to license new radio operators and hams wishing to upgrade their amateur license, provide communications for community events, and through club functions provide fellowship, training and the exchange of new ideas in the amateur radio field.

The Northern Lakes Amateur Radio Club over the years has provided communication services for the following governmental agencies and community events:
-Itasca County Emergency Services – backup communications
-Minnesota Interagency Fire Center - Grand Rapids (State of Minnesota) backup communications
-Itasca County Hospitals: Bigfork, Deer River, Grand Rapids – backup communications
-National Weather Service in Duluth – Weather Reports from trained Storm Spotters through Skywarn Program
-Severe Weather Drill April each year – NLARC runs Itasca County amateur radio response.
-National Night Out – NLARC sets up portable VHF communications station. Informs public about amateur radios capabilities.
-Field Day - Forest History Center - National training exercise run by the American Radio Relay League to prepare radio amateurs for emergency communications.
-Wizard of Oz Special Event Station – Judy Garland Museum – Portable station set up.
-White Oak Classic Sled Dog Races out of Deer River
-Voyagers Classic Sled Dog Races out of Northome
-White Oak Sled Dog Race – Deer River
-Cropwalk - Grand Rapids
-Forget Me Not Foundation- Fund Raiser/Horse Ride – Nashwauk
-Sled Dog Races in Grand Rapids early 1980’s
-Habitat for Humanity – Minnesota Bike Ride fund raiser – Uses NLARC repeater system
-National Weather Service Duluth used NLARC repeater system for a backup communication link to the National Weather Service Grand Forks during floods.
-Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) fires - Northern Lakes Amateur Radio Club provided communications link to BWCA fires near Grand Marias using High Frequency HF (shortwave) communications.
-Grand Forks Floods – NLARC provided radio amateur operators to that area
-BWCA Forest Fires – NLARC provided radio amateur operators to the Gun Flint fires
-Itasca County Emergency Services – backup communications
